Dressing the Part

I am craazy tired right now, so I'm going to keep it pretty short today.  Today during class we wrote on and decorated a colored piece of paper.  Thats because tomorrow is Tanabata! Oh...you don't know what that is? A great Japanese holiday of course! You write prayers to God on colored paper and hang it up in the trees (specifically bamboo I think but we'll see!)  Also There is a song that children sing, and just like Halloween they go around door to door getting candy and treats.  According to mamasan, we give out yoyos.  should be a blast!

After school, I took a culture class about the kimono and how to wear it.  They're tricky little buggers! But the female Kimono is gorgeous- incredibly layered.  You think the outside layer is pretty and then in that theres more color, and under that theres yet another colorful silken dress.  It reminded me of russian dolls.

After struggling with the knot, success!  Very comfy, although I maintained a tiny bit of Americanness as seen by the jeans poking out the bottom.

We also took a group picture!! Look how Japanese we look!  Anyway, just to illustrate some rules we learned- see those green stripes on the tatami mat? You can't step on them.  Same goes for the door threshold. Also there is a certain way to bow, and set phrases you must say.

After going back to street clothes, I went and bought my ticket for going to Sapporo and then headed to go meet mamasan at her quilt exhibit.  Today it was coming down, so she needed a strapping lad to help take everyone's down.  It was a lot of fun.

Dinner was yummy, and although today is monday Kai and Mamasan's sister didn't come over for dinner.  They did make an appearance though-
Kai in his baseball uniform! Adorable!  Speaking of baseball, I also bought tickets to see the Ham Fighters, Hokkaido's baseball team.  Which should take the word fan to a new level.

High: Watching mamasan sing songs in the car.  She knows all the words to all thes Japanese rock songs, and hums/sings along!
Low: Tiredness.
Hero: Once again Nao, this time for helping us buy tickets for the bus and baseball game!

PS- before I forget, the food I ate yesterday was Sea Urchin Sushi! it was sllliiiimmy!

  1. I love the kimono pose! Maybe your mom can make you some pajamas with that material.

  2. Um, Brown-san, question: why can't you step on the green lines? And why are they there? Just to make you think about where you're stepping? Or to promote proper spiritual alignment? Or just prohibitive decoration?

  3. Can you take a lot of pictures of Tanabata and describe it in detail? It's my birthday and I've always been really interested in it :)
    Thanks!
